Licensing Information Free and Open Source Licensing

It is our aim to share resources in a Free and Open manner. We are not lawyers nor do we have legal resources at our disposal. So we will use established Open Source Licenses so that they may be valid across the maximum number of legal jurisdictions. Our basic intent is to share resources in a permissive fashion for all use including commercial ones. The specific license we use depends on the resource.

Vishasita Open Font: We are licensing the Vishasita Open Font, in all its variants (otf, ttf, woff, woff2, eot) with the SIL Open Font License Version 1.1 with Vishasita as a Reserved Font Name. You can find more information at the SIL FAQ. It allows any use of the font including commercial use as long as any derived font does not use the word Vishasita in any part of its name.

eConcordance: We are licensing the eConcordance of the seal text with a CC BY 4.0 License. Here is a more human-readble version. It allows use for any purpose including commercial ones. We are requiring attribution in the hope that people who may require such a resource can learn about its existence.

Seal Search Engine: We are licensing source code of the Seal Search Engine with the Apache License Version 2.0. It is a permissive license that allows the release of modified parts of the code under any license. However, you are required to release all the unmodified parts of the software under the same Apache License. It also includes patent clauses for contributions into the codebase.

Seal Image Archive: The seal images we are using to create all Vishasita resources is extracted from the following reports of the Archaeological Survey of India.

  • MOHENJO-DARO AND THE INDUS CIVILIZATION - Edited by Sir John Marshall and published in 1931
  • FURTHER EXCAVATIONS AT MOHENJO-DARO - Edited by E. J. H. Mackay and published in 1937
  • EXCAVATIONS AT HARAPPA - Edited by Madho Sarup Vats and published in 1940
We believe that the photographs in these reports are now in the public domain. We are therefore extracting scanned copies of these photos for the archive of seal images on Vishasita.

Decipherment: The content on the Vishasita Blog, Dictionary, Wiki and E-Book represent our interpretations and we reserve all Rights to them. In the future we may relax restrictions as appropriate.
